The survey is based on a study that surveyed more than 17,000 global citizens from four regions to assess perceptions of 78 countries on 76 different metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Japan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South Korea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>China<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>United States<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Germany<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Russia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>United Kingdom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Singapore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Israel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switzerland<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Several factors point to the US falling behind in STEM education:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>US ranked 13th on Mathematics and 31st on Science test scores internationally<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only 34% of 8th graders and 41% of 4th graders were at or above average in mathematics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only 35% of 8th graders and 36% of 4th graders were at or above average in science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than 1 million STEM jobs are unfilled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pew research found that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2015\/01\/29\/public-and-scientists-views-on-science-and-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only 29% of the general public ranked U.S. STEM education for grades K-12 as above average or the best in the world<\/a>\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proficiency in STEM fields is important to a country\u2019s economics, innovation, security, and global competitiveness.<\/strong> Advancements in STEM can lead to the next big technological advancement, finding a cure for cancer, or even ending world hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>STEM sector jobs make up a large part of the overall U.S. market and their importance continues to grow. Between 2021 and 2031, U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/emp\/tables\/stem-employment.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">STEM jobs are estimated to grow by 10.8%<\/a> compared to 4.9% for non-STEM occupations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BLS-STEM-jobs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BLS-STEM-jobs-1024x435.jpg\" alt=\"BLS STEM jobs\" class=\"wp-image-51956\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BLS-STEM-jobs-1024x435.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BLS-STEM-jobs-300x127.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BLS-STEM-jobs-768x326.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BLS-STEM-jobs.jpg 1476w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>However, STEM education is not keeping up with the employment gap. <\/strong>It\u2019s possible that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/news\/hr-magazine\/summer2019\/pages\/the-u.s.-needs-to-prepare-workers-for-stem-jobs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3.5 million STEM jobs will need to be staffed by 2025<\/a>, including vital jobs in healthcare and technology. More than 1 million of those jobs are projected to go unfilled, but, why?&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Recommended: <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/why-kids-learn-stem\/\"><em>Why Kids Should Learn STEM<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part of the reason is the state of U.S. STEM education.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While science and math are in the core K-12 curriculum, other important subjects, like <a href=\"\/computer-science-classes-for-kids\/\">computer science<\/a> and engineering, are left out. By grade 12, proficiency has decreased to 24% in mathematics and 22% in science.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NAEP-Proficiency.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"461\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NAEP-Proficiency-1024x461.png\" alt=\"NAEP Proficiency\" class=\"wp-image-51857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NAEP-Proficiency-1024x461.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NAEP-Proficiency-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NAEP-Proficiency-768x346.png 768w, https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NAEP-Proficiency.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Recommended:<\/em><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/stem-statistics\/\"><em><strong>The Ultimate List of STEM Statistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In addition, we\u2019ve made little progress with STEM education in the last decade.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/ncses.nsf.gov\/pubs\/nsb20221\/data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">State of U.S. Science and Engineering 2022<\/a> report, average scores for U.S. fourth and eighth graders on a national assessment of mathematics improved from 1990 to 2007, but <strong>there was no overall measurable improvement in mathematics scores from 2007 to 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We are also falling behind in computer science and engineering <\/strong>and are among the countries that <em>do not<\/em> currently require computer science education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/what-do-we-know-about-the-expansion-of-k-12-computer-science-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brookings<\/a> studied online evidence of in-school computer science education across 219 countries. They found that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>44 (~20%) mandate that schools offer CS as an elective or required course<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>15 (~ 7%) offer CS in select schools and some subnational jurisdictions (states, provinces, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>160 (~73%) are only piloting CS education programs or had no available evidence of in-school CS education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-u-s-is-not-one-of-the-countries-that-requires-computer-science-education\"><strong>The U.S. is not one of the countries that requires computer science education.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike countries such as Korea, Japan, China, Australia, and England, as of 2022, the U.S. has not implemented national CS mandates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-u-s-states-that-require-computer-science-curriculum\"><strong>U.S. States That Require Computer Science Curriculum<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/code.org\/promote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Code.org<\/a>, only 27 states currently require all high schools to offer computer science. While up from 35% in 2018, as of 2021, only 51% of high schools were even offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">computer science courses<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/US-States-with-Coding-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/US-States-with-Coding-1-1024x627.png\" alt=\"US States Requiring Coding\" class=\"wp-image-51953\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/US-States-with-Coding-1-1024x627.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/US-States-with-Coding-1-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/US-States-with-Coding-1-768x470.png 768w, https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/US-States-with-Coding-1-1536x940.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/US-States-with-Coding-1-2048x1253.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Source:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/code.org\/promote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">code.org\/promote\/<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unfortunately, several factors stand in the way of improved STEM education, such as costs, equity, and qualified instructors.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Costs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some states have funds dedicated to STEM education, but the cost to make it required across grade levels would still be significant. Implementing a STEM curriculum can incur costs like computers, labs, and training for teachers. For students, earning a degree in computer science can also be costly. <a href=\"https:\/\/code.likeagirl.io\/stem-education-cost-resources-93da5fd7f61c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CodeLikeaGirl<\/a> estimated that a 4-year university degree in STEM would cost between $45,000 and $60,000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Equity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown that there are disparities in STEM education for women, members of minority groups, and economically disadvantaged people. These may be a result of issues like gender discrimination, systemic racism, and other biases. This lack of equity means that a large portion of the population does not engage in or have access to STEM education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Qualified Instructors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many school districts already face a shortage of qualified teachers and even more so for low-income schools. The STEM teacher shortage is a national problem. The <a href=\"https:\/\/specialedshortages.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2020-2021-AAEE-Educator-Supply-and-Demand-Report.pdf\">Educator Supply and Demand Report 2020-21<\/a> shows that all math and science education, along with computer science and technology education, have a shortage of teachers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>K-12 STEM education is the foundation of secondary and postsecondary education in these fields.<\/strong> Kids need to start learning STEM early to build their interest and confidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With little or no exposure in K-12 to STEM topics, students are not prepared for college and graduate level studies, therefore creating the employment gap. <a href=\"\/\">Coding classes<\/a>, coding clubs, and coding competitions only make up for a small part of this gap. As a result, our workforce will lack the vital skills to fill these important positions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So, what strategies can we use to improve the state of STEM education in the US?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. National programs and policies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Improvement in programs and policies at the national level will be required to meet STEM needs. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/stem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Department of Education<\/a> has set out some programs to improve STEM education. This includes federal grants for educators and students and the <a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=ED590474\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">STEM Education Strategic Plan<\/a>. You can see the 2021 progress report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/stem#stem-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Broader access to STEM education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All students, regardless of factors like gender, race, and income level, should have access to STEM education. Students need to be provided with equitable opportunities at an early age so they can prepare for secondary and postsecondary STEM education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Train more qualified instructors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, there is a national teacher shortage, but it will be important to expand and strengthen the pool of STEM teachers. Not only do we need more competent STEM teachers in all areas, but students also need diverse role models and mentors in STEM.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Recommended: <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codewizardshq.com\/kids-learn-to-code\/\"><em>26 Reasons Learning to Code Benefits Your Child<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>As it stands, the U.S. appears to be falling behind other countries in STEM education. <\/strong>Without advancements in STEM, the U.S. will not have the skills to compete on an international level.
