Instead, game creators will typically turn to a <em>game engine<\/em> to take care of the framework. Then, they can focus on making a great game!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-game-engines\">What are Game Engines?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Game engines are collections of code that need to be running in the background so that a game can run as it is supposed to. Many game engines include a variety of code libraries. Creators can pull from these libraries and customize the code.  They can create the exact game they want but with far less manual coding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the things that a game engine might take care of include the code managing object collisions, sound effects, game physics, and more.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, if the game you want to make is more complex than you can reasonably code by hand, a game engine is the collection of tools that you\u2019ll need to make it all possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of the most popular game engines are Unity and Unreal Engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unity<\/a> is a game development engine that allows developers to create 2D, 3D, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) games and interactive experiences. Pok\u00e9mon Go and Angry Birds 2 are popular examples of games built on Unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unreal Engine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrealengine.com\/en-US\">Unreal engine<\/a> allows developers to create real-time 3D games, films, animations, and more. It\u2019s known for its high-quality graphics and powerful capabilities making it a popular choice for AAA games. But they\u2019re only one of many different types of games that you can code. Interestingly, even though consoles like the Xbox and Playstation are designed for the sole purpose of playing games, they\u2019re only the third most popular place to play video games.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Computer Games<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personal computers are incredibly powerful machines. Therefore, native computer games are capable of providing the absolute best game experience in terms of graphics and speed. If you want a game on the cutting edge of what\u2019s possible, this is the type of game for you. But while computer games are the best-performing option, they\u2019re only second-place in popularity.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mobile Games<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theesa.com\/resources\/essential-facts-about-the-us-video-game-industry\/2024-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Around 78% of Americans<\/a> that play video games play them on a mobile device.
