Their lifetime earnings is $1.67M, compared to $1.19M for other college graduates. (<a href=\"https:\/\/code.org\/promote\/stats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Code.org<\/a>)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stem-women\"><strong>Women in STEM Statistics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These statistics examine women in STEM-focused careers. Many studies throughout the years suggest that even though there is no significant difference in STEM-focused abilities between men and women, women are far underrepresented in high-paying positions in STEM fields. This is despite the fact that, on average, companies with women in leadership roles perform better than companies without.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Global Statistics for Women in STEM<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Globally, women comprise only 29.2% of the STEM workforce<\/strong> in 146 nations evaluated, compared to nearly 50% of non-STEM occupations. (<a href=\"https:\/\/swe.org\/research\/2023\/global-stem-workforce\/#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Global%20Gender,%25%20of%20non%2DSTEM%20occupations.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Society of Women Engineers<\/a>, 2023)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By 2022, large global tech firms are predicted to have<strong> nearly 33% women representation<\/strong> in their workforce. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/industry\/technology\/women-tech-leadership.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deloitte<\/a>, 2019)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only<strong> 29.3%, less than one-third,<\/strong> of those employed in scientific research and development (R&amp;D) are women. (<a href=\"https:\/\/builtin.com\/women-tech\/women-in-tech-workplace-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Builtin<\/a>, 2023)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the academic year of 2020\/21, about <strong>860,760 male and 1.2 million female students earned a Bachelor&#8217;s degree<\/strong> in the United States. (<a href=\"https:\/\/professionalprograms.mit.edu\/blog\/leadership\/the-gender-gap-in-stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MIT<\/a>, 2023)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The<strong> number of S&amp;E degrees earned by women between 2011 and 2020 increased<\/strong> by 63% at the associate\u2019s level, 34% at the bachelor\u2019s level, 45% at the master\u2019s degree level, and 18% at the doctorate level. (<a href=\"https:\/\/ncses.nsf.gov\/pubs\/nsf23315\/report\/science-and-engineering-degrees-earned#:~:text=The%20number%20of%20S%26E%20degrees,(figure%207%2D1).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Science Foundation<\/a>, 2023)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Despite accounting for over half of the college-educated workforce, women in the United States&nbsp;made up<strong> only 26% of computer and mathematical scientists, and 16% of engineers in 2019<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/ncses.nsf.gov\/pubs\/nsb20221\/u-s-and-global-stem-education-and-labor-force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Science Foundation<\/a>, 2022)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women are underrepresented in software engineering, only 15% of software engineers in the U.S. are women. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/working_papers\/WR1282.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rand<\/a>, 2018)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Women are more likely than men to work in the \u201cSTEM periphery\u201d, <\/strong>roles in which they can apply STEM skills and expertise, but which are lower-paying jobs outside of traditional STEM occupations. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2018\/01\/09\/diversity-in-the-stem-workforce-varies-widely-across-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a>, 2018)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Women remain underrepresented in engineering (14%), computer (25%) and physical science (39%) occupations<\/strong>. In general, we can see that despite diversity in a company being extremely beneficial for both its profits and its resiliency, minorities are still vastly underrepresented in STEM fields. This is likely caused by a number of factors, but one of the most obvious causes is the lack of funding for schools with larger minority populations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Diversity is America&#8217;s unique advantage in science and technology&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>NSF Director <a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/news\/diversity-and-stem-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sethuraman Panchanathan<\/a>.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Collectively, Hispanic, Black, American Indian, and Alaska Native people made up <strong>31% of the U.S. population, but 24% of the STEM workforce<\/strong> in 2021. (<a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/news\/diversity-and-stem-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Science Foundation<\/a>, 2023)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unemployment rates in 2021 for STEM workers who were Black (6.6%) and Hispanic (5.7%) were higher than for white (2.9%) and Asian (2.3%) workers<\/strong>.
